Poker Rules

There are an enourmus amount of special flavours of the game of poker. Here, we will present the rules of the most popular poker games in online gambling.

We assume that the reader knows the basic rules of poker, including hand ranking.
Read more about this on our poker basics page.

Texas Hold'em

Texas Hold'em is a so called "community" game where the players share some cards on the table. These cards are delat face-up. Each player then gets two "private" down-cards and each player may then combine their own two cards with the five community cards to make the best hand possible.

The start of the game

The game starts by dealing two down cards to each player, known as "pocket cards". This is followed by a round of betting where each player may bet, call, check or fold. In many cases, forced bets are use, meaning that one or two players to the left of the dealer are forced to bet ("blind bets"). Play continues with each player have the option to fold, call the bet, or raise. A betting round may continue more than one round the table, until no one raises.

The flop

After the initial betting round, three cards are dealt face up on the table, this is called the flop. Another round of betting starts, where action begins on the first blind, left of the dealer.

The turn

A fourth card is dealt face up on the table, "the turn", and is followed by another round of betting.

The river

The final shared card ("the river") is dealt face-up on the table. The final betting round starts.

Betting

Fixed bets, the bets on the turn and the river are ususally double the size of those before and on the flop.

No-limit Hold'em

No limit Hold is essentially the same game as Texas Hold'em, but with no limit on the betting.

Omaha Hold'em

Omaha poker follows the same play sequence as Texas Hold'em poker, but with two differences:
a) players are dealt four "pocket" cards instead of two; and
b) players must use two "pocket" cards and three "community" cards to make your best high hand.
(If anyone tells you that Omaha is just like Hold'em, they are not discussing strategy.)
